After months of reading a book here, a book there, a book nowhere, it was so nice to have a month without classes and without stress. Because I got to read so much! Was every one of these books great? Absolutely not. But! Enough of them were enjoyable and entertaining. Now that I’m back to college, who knows the next time I’ll finish a book. So for now, I’m riding the high of a January spent reading!
My favorite book from January was definitely A Second Story. It was slow, sure, but it was also so adorably cozy. I mean, you had a bookstores, companion cats, and so much small town charm! I enjoyed every second of the reading experience. There is a sequel, but like with Legends and Lattes, I’m not sure if I’ll end up grabbing it. Some of these cozy fantasies I prefer to read as standalones, I don’t need them to establish a sprawling universe. They can be a singular experience, and that’s okay! That’s what I prefer actually!
Now, my most disappointing read from January? All the Hidden Paths. I’m so incredibly sad to say that because I loved A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, the first book in the series. And I think All the Hidden Paths was a fine book, but not a good sequel. It just didn’t add anything to the story! It relied so heavily on frustrating miscommunications. And while that’s fine for a couple pages, I got so tired of it. 500 pages of no communication is ridiculous!
But, thankfully, the rest of the books I read were pretty great. My Vampire Plus-One, Perfectly Wicked, and Make Mine a Marquess were adorably fluffy romances. Heartless Hunter was a reread, and it was just as entertaining the second time through. Sadly, The Calculation of You and Me had some irritating writing quirks so I ended up leaving it behind, but The Village Library Demon Hunting Society more than made up for it with its mix of whimsy and ridiculousness. Here’s to a good month of February reading as well!
